Sycamore Cupboard

Part of a bedroom furniture set, the cupboard unit makes use of curved sides to give a flow to the piece. It was designed to give the appearance of a standard cupboard while containing audio equipment – cable management features are included. The door fronts use an ‘S’ curve on the front face of rosewood inlay to contrast the light coloured sycamore. Sliding doors were used on the cupboard to allow it to occupy an awkward space.

Ash Natural Edge Mirror

Scottish ash typically has great grain patterns and this is a nice way to show off a piece with its edge still on. The use of ash gives a contemporary feel.

Spiral Table

The spiral table was a happy accident after a collection of triangular offcuts were tied together with an elastic band. Splaying out these pieces showed the potential for the shape. The scaled up version uses 12 oak pieces doweled & glued together with a two tone top.

Windsor Chairs

While the Windsor chair is a traditional, classic design, each one is slightly different and the ‘unique feature’ in this project was the steam bent arm supports. Quite a nice feature, giving a very elegant curve to the profile of the chair. The project was for a matching pair (so unique design but they did have to match each other!!)

Wood is ash finished in shellac and wax.

Burr Elm Mirrors

Some pieces of wood deserve to be shown off. These pieces of burr elm were looking great before being planed up, but with a bit of work and finished with oil the grain is amazing.

Burr elm mirrors are 1m x 75cm, finished in Danish oil

Wegner Chair

Based on a classic Danish design by the late Hans Wegner, this chair is exceptionally comfortable. The frame is oak (with a fantastic and quite unusual grain pattern). A couple of hand made cushions complete the design.

Ash Drawer Unit

Ash Drawer Unit

This is the third iteration of the curvy drawer unit. The shape is intended to give a functional piece of furniture with a shape that is a bit more interesting than the conventional rectangle profile. This unit is in Scottish ash with rosewood inlay on the top and down the drawer fronts. The drawer unit has plenty storage but has real character.

Rib Rocking Chair

The Rib Rocking Chair is a striking piece. It is made from some fantastically characterful rippled sycamore. The design is based on a series of ribs that form the seat and back – this both gives a great look and is very comfortable. The inspiration comes partly from Sam Maloof’s classic rocking chair with its oversized rockers and partly from the Tim Stead rib chair.
